Amor de Dias, the long-term collaboration between Alasdair MacLean (The Clientele) and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez (Pipas), will release their sophomore album The House at Sea on January 29, 2013.
While their debut album Street of the Love of Days took three years to make, The House at Sea was recorded and mixed in only nine days. As a result, the sessions centered around a smaller band?the twin Spanish guitars and voices of Nunez-Fernandez and MacLean, and an occasional rhythm section of James Hornsey and Howard Monk, both formerly of The Clientele.
The fast pace of the sessions resulted in a rawer, more urgent album, recorded by Brian O'Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Denim, Birdie) on 1970s valve equipment with a feeling for space and a deliberately limited palette, all the elements of which had to count.
The House at Sea is a snapshot of a year's songs written in London and Madrid. There are pop songs, delirious dream accounts, strange lyrical puzzles, and stories from the city and the suburbs. The theme of the sea threads its way throughout the record along with a gentle sense of drifting and departure, of being lost, of saudade?a sadness at lost things.

KEXP describes The House at Sea:
It’s hard to feel sad about British band The Clientele’s uncertain future and potentially permanent hiatus while Amor de Días glows brightly. With songwriting partner Lupe Núñez-Fernández (also of the duo Pipas), Clientele frontman Alasdair MacLean continues to carry the torch of happy-sad songs of brightly performed melodies and melancholic lyrics. Finished in a fraction of the time it took to record their debut, The House at Sea, due January 29 on Merge, features a much more confident blend of woozy Spanish guitar, jazzy bossa nova rhythms and the pair’s seductively breathless vocals. At moments, the new album is occasionally darker than its predecessor, but it will likely appeal to the same fans of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, Belle & Sebastian and Nick Drake. Those longing for The Clientele should take note: producer Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream), who worked with them on 2005′s Strange Geometry, is back on the board here, and (former?) bandmates James Hornsey and Howard Monk provide an occasional rhythm section. Don’t take our word for it, though; give a listen to this exclusive preview of Amor de Días’ The House at Sea.Listen to The House at Sea now at KEXP.org

Amor de Días, the musical partnership between Alasdair of The Clientele and Lupe of Pipas, will release their sophomore album The House at Sea on January 29.
Today, Alasdair and Lupe premiered the video for “Jean’s Waving” at UndertheRadarMag.com. The video was directed by Grant Wilkinson, and produced by automatikfilms. “It was a beautiful sunny day and we went down to Wivenhoe on the Essex coast because we heard Martin Newell from the Cleaners from Venus lived there,” says the band of the clip. “But we didn’t see him, and ended up shooting the video instead!”

With The House at Sea, Amor de Días take advantage of the same sensibilities that have made them successful at all their varied past endeavors: whimsy, invention, and a sense of play. Recorded by Brian O’Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Denim, Birdie) on 1970s valve equipment, the album spans genres like bossa nova and flamenco without sacrificing the astute pop songwriting for which its members are known.

Amor de Días, the long-term collaboration between Alasdair MacLean (The Clientele) and Lupe Núñez-Fernández (Pipas), will release their sophomore album The House at Sea on January 29. Today, Chickfactor premiered “Jean’s Waving,” the first single from The House at Sea.
Recorded by Brian O’Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, Denim, Birdie) on 1970s valve equipment with a feeling for space and a deliberately limited palette, all the elements of which had to count,The House at Sea turned out to be anything but spartan. There are samba and flamenco rhythms rubbing up against Flying Nun-style pop and the mid-80s bossa of bands like Antena and Weekend, as well as melancholy film themes in waltz time and quiet folk tunes, sung in English and in Spanish.

Amor de Días, consisting of Alasdair MacLean, front man for The Clientele, and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of indie-pop duo Pipas, have debuted their brand new video for “Wild Winter Trees.” The band just wrapped up a North American tour with Damon and Naomi in support of their debut album Street of the Love of Days, available now on CD and LP in the Merge store.

The video for “Wild Winter Trees” was directed by Mikhaël Hers. Mikhaël Hers has directed three short films, including Charell and Primrose Hill, official selections of the International Critic’s Week in 2006 and 2007 (Cannes), respectively. He featured a couple Clientele songs in a film called “Memory Lane,” his first feature-length, that was presented at the 2010 Locarno Film Festival. After the band saw the premiere they thought it only perfect for him to direct the video for this single. The images work as an analog to the lyrics of the song, but deepen and focus its ideas of innocence lost and time passing.
This week, the band has teamed up with MAGNET to be guest editors on the website. Visit MagnetMagazine.com to enjoy their bi-daily posts through out Sunday, and check out their Magnet Q&A to learn more about the duo.

Amor de Días (Spanish for “love of days”) is the name of the until-now secret supergroup formed by Alasdair MacLean of the Clientele and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of Pipas. Street of the Love of Days, their debut album, will be released May 17 on CD, LP and digital download.
Over the course of three years, Alasdair and Lupe quietly put together their debut record during evenings and weekends as they called in local friends (Louis Philippe) and visiting musicians (Damon and Naomi, Gary Olson) for sessions, building up the songs’ multifaceted arrangements and vocal harmonies with harps, bouzoukis, strings, recorders, and brass over the core of dual Spanish guitars and the dream imagery of their bilingual lyrics.
The result is a focused, cohesive jewel of chamber pop that reflects a little of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso’s elegant brand of bossa nova, a bit of Erik Satie’s haunting night music, and a large dose of spooky psychedelic folk. But the beautiful harmony that sings throughout the record makes it all their own.
At times spare and empty, at times rich with instrumental texture, and at times jazz-tinged and hypnotic, Street of the Love of Days rivals anything either Alasdair or Lupe has recorded before.
