But not personal in the way of, say, a coming-of-age record, or a diary about the past, which Last Summer was. Many of the songs seem to be about love, or love lost, but whether any of the experience is hers or someone else's, she isn't saying. "It's not as specific a narrative this time," she says. "There's a universality to it." So incisive are the lyrics, in fact, that Friedberger's bassist incorrectly assumed that two of the songs were about him. "I loved that," she says. "I want him to feel like the songs are about him. I want you to feel like the songs are about you."

We are happy to announce the addition of William Tyler and Reigning Sound to the Merge Records family!
William Tyler has long been associated with Merge through his lengthy career as multi-instrumentalist in Lambchop. His 2011 debut solo album was described by Pitchfork as “arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more.”

Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 21, and we have four very special releases to mark the occasion of one of our favorite days of the year! Also, Hospitality, the Love Language & M. After joining the Portlandia tour as “Special Guest Musician” this month, Eleanor Friedberger will visit Texas in March for the SXSW Music Festival as well as a residency in Marfa, TX. Eleanor will attend a week long residency for Ballroom Marfa where she will record a limited edition 7-inch with Gory Smelley of Marfa Recording Company and perform at the Crowley Theater on March 24.
Also, Eleanor is bringing her full band back out on the road in April with Merge label mates Hospitality. Eleanor’s band is Matt Asti (MGMT), Ahmed Gallab (touring member of Yeasayer & Caribou), and John Eatherly (Be Your Own Pet & Turbo Fruits).
Eleanor Friedberger is a lover of the Velvet Underground and Jorge Ben; she’s a fearless performer, as comfortable fronting a band as she is playing alone on a stage with an acoustic guitar; she’s one of the sweetest alto voices in music. Nowhere is all of this more apparent than on her very first solo album, Last Summer, out now on Merge Records.

During a recent stop in her hometown of Chicago, Eleanor recorded a takeaway session with Paste which was filmed in one of her favorite guitar shops. Watch her perform two songs from Last Summer as well as a brand-new tune called “I’ll Never Be Happy Again.”
And last but not least, Eleanor will be at Sonic Boom Records – Ballard for an in-store performance on September 6 at 6pm. This will be her only appearance in the Seattle area on this tour, though, so mark your calendars!
