Shout Out Louds return on February 26 with Optica.
Following their 2010 album Work, Adam, Bebban, Ted, Carl, and Eric headed out on their most successful tour ever and then returned home to their own pursuits. Families were expanded, side projects were launched, and homes outside of Stockholm were explored. When the time came to work on another Shout Out Louds record they wanted to return to the playful spirit that first brought them together ten years ago. Instead of "work," they wanted to dance!
Rather than rehearsing and then recording in the studio as they'd always done, everyone felt free to write and work on their own parts individually as Optica as taking shape. Also, the band worked with a string composer to achieve lush arrangements described by Carl as "Disney on drugs" and by Adam as "like warm mayonnaise."
Shout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about 1.5 years in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and?Optica?was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound.

Today, Shout Out Louds premiered the new video for “Illusions” via RollingStone.com. The band will kick off their US tour in support of their new album Optica on May 7 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
The video follows a woman on a speed dating adventure ending in a dance party. Frontman Adam Olenius told RollingStone.com, “In Sweden, to get 25 people to dance and act or even show up for a video shoot or anything in that area you have to buy them copious amounts of booze and lure them with money. In L.A., the city of dreams, they show up for nothing and shimmer!”
Shout Out Louds took their time with these songs, recording for about one-and-a-half years in a small Stockholm studio and producing themselves for the first time with help from Johannes Berglund. A theme emerged and Optica was born, an album celebrating color and light from a band confident in its sound, filled with real strings, trombones, trumpets and flutes.
NPR’s Stephen Thompson writes, “Listening to ["Illusions] in 2013, it’s as if a young band is tapping into our shared nostalgia by rehashing a hit that’s somehow been lodged in our memory banks all along. ‘Illusions’ may be brand-new, but it already feels eternal.”
Optica is available on CD, LP and digital now in the Merge store.

On February 26, new albums from Mount Moriah and Shout Out Louds will be available in stores. Thanks to the magic of the internet, you can listen to both albums in their entirety now!
Where 2011′s Mount Moriah tended towards the simpler, Miracle Temple boasts fuller arrangements, replete with forceful vocals and lyrics that read like prize-winning poetry. The instrumentation’s more soulful, the choruses more rambunctious, and the band’s vision of the South is even more intricate — and conflicted — than it was before. No stone goes unturned: whether it’s meditations on gender or reminisces of ex-lovers, Miracle Temple supplies both eloquence & rock ‘n’ roll in abundance. Mount Moriah was chosen as one of Spin’s 5 Best New Artists and Popmatters deems the album “a lush, deeply layered, sunburst of a record.”

When the time came to work on the songs that would become Optica, Shout Out Louds wanted to return to the playful spirit that first brought them together ten years ago. Instead of “work,” they wanted to dance! NPR’s Stephen Thompson writes, “Which brings us around to Optica, the new fourth album by the Swedish band Shout Out Louds, and particularly its song ‘Illusions.’ Listening to it in 2013, it’s as if someone traveled back in time 30 years and slipped The Thompson Twins the biggest hit of their career, and now a young band is tapping into our shared nostalgia by rehashing a hit that’s somehow been lodged in our memory banks all along. ‘Illusions’ may be brand-new, but it already feels eternal.”

Today, Shout Out Louds have shared “Illusions” a new song from their highly anticipated new album Optica which will be in stores later this month. Also, Shout Out Louds have announced new US shows in May including a New York show as well as an appearance at the Sasquatch Festival.
The Line of Best Fit describes the song, “‘Illusions’ is vintage Shout Out Louds with razor-edged guitar hooks and cyclical drum patterns providing the rhythmic thrust for Adam Olenius’ sweet croon to float over; although the unashamedly up tempo jangles are tempered by multi-instrumentalist Bebban Stenborg’s sensitive, aching backing vocals.”

Shout Out Louds will soon hit the road for worldwide touring including a multitude of shows at this year’s SXSW. Those performances will be announced soon. Shout Out Louds’ first show in support of Optica will take place in Brooklyn, NY, at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 11 leading up to the SXSW Music Festival, and they have confirmed a full stateside tour for May 2013, beginning May 7 in Washington, DC, and ending on May 23 at the El Rey in Los Angeles, CA.
Following their 2010 album Work, the band (Adam Olenius – lead vocals; Bebban Stenborg – keyboards; Ted Malmros – bass; Carl von Arbin – guitar; and Eric Edman – drums) headed out on their most successful tour ever and returned home to their own pursuits. Families were expanded, side projects were launched and homes outside of Stockholm were explored. When the time came to work on another Shout Out Louds record they wanted to return to the playful spirit that first brought them together 10 years ago.
Shout Out Louds explain:
“In our eagerness to please no one but ourselves this time around, we decided to take on the challenge of producing our own music for the first time ever. Our close friend and sound aficionado of choice Johannes Berglund and his studio in Stockholm presented us with an ideal package for the endeavor. A secluded work space close to home, but off the earth’s surface, a more than generous timeline, and the patient and brilliant sixth member we needed to get through the whole thing safely. Together we made up a downstairs world of explosive colors, big, warm sounds and a very, very uninhibited work process. We never worried about following a clear path, trusting that the conscious decision not to worry would be enough to lead us right, and that right doesn’t necessarily have to mean rational or even reasonable…We all set prestige and skillfulness aside in favor of experimentation and sheer gusto. That will probably come across live too. I don’t think we’ve ever been this excited to take an album on tour.”
Pre-order Optica now on CD or LP in the Merge store. LP Preorders will include a free Merge Records LP slipmat and a poster. Preorders will ship to arrive on or around the release date of February 26, 2013. Don’t forget . . . the Merge Holiday Code works on pre-orders, too!

Today, Shout Out Louds released “Blue Ice,” their first new song in three years, as a 7-inch single made of ice with an instructional video and stream of the song at Pitchfork.
Of the song “Blue Ice,” The Line of Best Fit said, “The track, a delicate shuffle, with Adam Olenius musings recounting the end of a tenuous love affair and fading devotion – “it always ends in the same way” – maintaining pace throughout, the ballad floats gently against a bed of swooning strings and muted guitar lines. It’s lovely, delicate stuff but don’t be fooled by its mid paced nature – the forthcoming album is stacked full of the usual anthemic qualities we’ve come to expect from the group, whilst the quality of songwriting and production takes another bold step towards eternal greatness.”
10 kits to produce these 7″s of ice were manufactured and we have one to give away! For a chance to win, send your mailing address to merge@mergerecords.com with “Blue Ice Giveaway” in the subject line*. The contest ends Monday, December 3. Over 350 people have entered already since the contest began a few hours ago.
Watch Adam from Shout Out Louds demonstrate how to make the 7″ below and listen to “Blue Ice” via Soundcloud, Spotify or iTunes.
A new Shout Out Louds full-length will be available early next year. The record arrives as Shout Out Louds celebrates 10 years as a band, and is a follow-up to 2010’s acclaimed Work.

It’s easy to miss out on some of the digital-only releases we throw your way—the Internet is a pretty crowded place these days! Here’s a quick summary of what you may have missed:
The limited-edition Destroyer 12-inch “Archer on the Beach” is out-of-print in the Merge store, but you can now buy the songs via digital download!
Don’t miss out on Swim Remixes—Caribou’s answer to what happens when you put one of the year’s hottest dance records in the hands of some of the world’s best DJs! With reworks of some of Swim’s hottest cuts by Junior Boys, Fuck Buttons, Nite Jewel, DJ Koze, Walls, Gold Panda, Gavin Russom, and more, Swim Remixes contains over an hour-and-a-half of new, fresh takes on Caribou’s latest opus.
Let’s Wrestle bring us a tasty piece of next year’s sophomore record with the “Getting Rest”/“When I Was In Hospital” digital single. Be warned: these young Londoners are not to be missed.
Shout Out Louds’ Fall Hard EP expands upon Work’s catchy first single with non-album cuts “Fall Hard Pt. 2” and “Can’t Explain.”
Lou Barlow + the missingmen’s = Sentridoh III is Lou’s first recorded output with new backing band the missingmen. Described by the band as “an almost live representation of the Lou Barlow + the missingmen live show,” this mini-album breathes new, rocking life into Sebadoh and Sentridoh classics, Lou’s solo material, and even a haunting cover of the timeless Skip James song “I’m So Glad.”
Tracey Thorn followed up this year’s gorgeous Love and Its Opposite with a pair of digital EPs, Why Does the Wind? and Opposites, that offer up wildly creative remixes of some of the album’s most-loved songs. Why Does the Wind? pairs the album track of the same name with remixes by Morgan Geist, Michel Clies, and André Lodemann, along with a radio edit and dub version. As for the Opposites EP, Tracey herself probably says it best: “If the remixes for the last single ‘Why Does the Wind?’ were aimed at the dancefloor, these are perhaps aimed more at the head.” Visionquest (“Swimming”), Walls (“Kentish Town”), and Blue Daisy (“Late in the Afternoon”) provide penetrating new takes presented alongside the originals.
Let’s also revisit Lambchop’s magnetic Live at XX Merge performance; Portastatic’s Make It Sound In Tune EP; digital reissues of Richard Buckner’s landmark albums Impasse, The Hill, and Bloomed; and The Ladybug Transistor’s fantastic Here Comes the Rain covers EP.
Our Holiday Coupon applies to digital releases, too, so download away!
