Superchunk

Superchunk
Since releasing their first 7-inch in 1989, Superchunk has run the gamut of milestone albums: early punk rock stompers, polished mid-career masterpieces, and lush, adventurous curveballs. Conventional wisdom holds that a band two decades into its career can only rehash or reinvent, but with Majesty Shredding, Superchunk has done something entirely different. Neither a return nor a departure, Majesty Shredding telescopes two decades into 41 indelible, action-packed minutes. It is the sound of youthful exuberance fine-tuned with grown-up confidence. And it may very well be Superchunk's best record yet.

Though it has been nine years since Superchunk released their last full-length album, Here's to Shutting Up, Majesty Shredding is the result of a focused burst of creativity brought on by the band's recent volley of live performances. Having cleared the deck of odds and sods with last year's Leaves in the Gutter EP, Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan set about to write a batch of songs that would capture the spirit of the band's live shows. From 1997's Indoor Living through Here's to Shutting Up, Superchunk had written most of their records together, building their songs through collaborative writing and rehearsal. But, in an effort not to overthink their new material (and because drummer Jon Wurster lives a couple hundred miles away from the rest of the band), Superchunk approached Majesty Shredding the same way they approached their early records: McCaughan provided skeletal demos to his bandmates, who in turn fleshed out the songs during a brief period of rehearsal and recording.

This sense of purpose is enhanced by the presence of Scott Solter, an engineer and producer known for coaxing exceptional performances out of the artists he works with. Majesty Shredding is a powerful document of Superchunk as a band, augmented as needed with well-placed harmonies, keyboards, and guitar overdubs (and some backing vocals courtesy of the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle). Each song seems perfectly suited to its respective treatment, as the band moves lithely from shout-along rave-ups like 'Crossed Wires' to melancholy slow burners like 'Fractures in Plaster.' As always, Superchunk strikes a unique and effortless balance between melody and force, craft and spontaneity, the energy of youth and the wisdom of experience. Majesty Shredding is Superchunk's most thorough and thoughtful record, and it hits like a punch in the gut.

On songs like 'My Gap Feels Weird,' 'Rosemarie,' and 'Digging for Something,' McCaughan asks: How can we connect with our pasts and still move forward? Majesty Shredding offers an answer. During album closer 'Everything at Once,' McCaughan sings about how strongly we identify with songs about nothing in particular: 'The feedback and the drums / The feeling noise becomes / Nothing and everything at once.' We close our eyes and think about the kind of music that's meant the most to us in our lives...and we realize that we're listening to it right now.

The Superchunk Rock Vessel plowed forth from 1993 to 1996. The band put out one more record for Matador (On the Mouth) and then opted to release its own records, through Merge. The album, Foolish brought stylistic shifts and critical acclaim. A second singles compilation (the first was 1992's Tossing Seeds) came out in the summer of '95. It was titled Incidental Music and contained most of their harder-to-find numbers (imports, b-sides, comp. tracks). Boston was the setting for Superchunk's next album session. 1995's Here's Where the Strings Come In was recorded at the city's Fort Apache Studios and slated for a fall release. The band toured hard for Strings all over the world, scoring a minor hit with the "Hyper Enough" single and video.

After a brief hiatus and another Australian tour the band released a limited-edition EP called The Laughter Guns. The band then started the writing process for what would become Indoor Living. Recording commenced in Bloomington, Indiana's Echo Park Studios with Chapel Hillian John Plymale co-producing with the band. Superchunk stretched out a bit on Indoor Living, expanding their sound by adding some new instruments to the mix: piano, organ vibes and more. The album was by far their most adventurous and at the same time their most accessible to date.

To place their own indelible mark on the end of a decade, nay, the end of a century, Superchunk delivered Come Pick Me Up, their 7th full-length studio release for Chapel Hill's favorite sons [and daughter]. It also served as part of the 10th anniversary for the band and their label, Merge Records.

Jim, John, Mac and Laura traveled to Chicago this time around for a recording session at Electrical Audio Studios with legendary abstract pop pioneer Jim O'Rourke. Set on continuing the musical journey that began on Indoor Living, Superchunk have continued the expansion and growth of their sound that started with Foolish, pushing themselves to new heights of creativity. O'Rourke was a perfect choice; incorporating strings and horns on some tracks and lending the expertise and studio savvy to help Superchunk create their most mature and enduring record to date. They've come a long way since those "Slack Motherfucker" days of working at the Kinko's on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

For Here's To Shutting Up, the band traveled to Atlanta, GA's Zero Return Studios to record the basic tracks, bringing producer Brian Paulson with them. The finishing touches were added at Paulson's own Uwharrie Ridge Studios in Chatham County NC, just down the road from Chapel Hill. On Here's To Shutting Up, Paulson enjoys the distinction of being the first producer to work with Superchunk twice (the first time being 1994's Foolish LP), and this familiarity helped lend to a comfort zone that allowed the band to stretch out their musical sensibilities, creating a gorgeous tapestry of sound that is as refreshing as it is astounding.

Here's To Shutting Up documents their ongoing maturation as both songwriters and musicians. Songs such as "Late-Century Dream," "Phone Sex" and "Drool Collection" shimmer with intricate melodies and some of the most diverse instrumentation and stylistic innovations yet heard in the Superchunk canon. But the boys and a girl can still rock out with the best of them on tracks such as "Rainy Streets" and "Art Class."

Superchunk will release I Hate Music, their tenth studio album, on August 20. The band has also announced tour dates throughout the late summer and fall.

After taking nearly a decade off following the release of Here’s to Shutting Up, Mac, Laura, Jon, and Jim decided to shout it out again in 2010 with Majesty Shredding, an album perfectly described by its own title. It’s a celebratory set of whoa-whoa-whoas from a group so thrilled by making music together again that they can’t contain themselves.

The band’s forthcoming release, I Hate Music, is Majesty’s dark twin. It’s similarly aggressive—often moreso (see “Staying Home”)—and every bit as energetic. It reflects the joys of a life spent immersed in music (“Me & You & Jackie Mittoo,” “Trees of Barcelona”), but there’s a dark undercurrent as well. That title isn’t tongue-in-cheek, but it’s really more a question than a statement: When you’re 20, lazy co-workers and romantic missteps number among your biggest worries; two decades later, life’s bigger questions knock louder and louder, demanding answers.

I Hate Music is an album about love more than anything else: love of life, love of living, love of people, and yeah, love of music. It defies its own title so completely and diligently that it never even seems like a fair fight: There’s no pain this deep or yearning this severe without the type of love earned over a lifetime. “I hate music – what is it worth? / Can’t bring anyone back to this earth” goes the first line in “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo.” That song and its ten companions can’t relive the past or resurrect those lost, but they can keep them close enough to see and hear and celebrate. It’s dark in here, but if we conjure the right words and sounds, maybe we’ll find our way out.

Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 20, and we have two very special vinyl releases to mark the occasion of one of our favorite days of the year! The only way to get your hands on them is to visit your local independent record store on April 20.

Superchunk – “Void” b/w “Faith” 7-inch
Two brand-new Superchunk songs on coke-bottle clear vinyl, with art designed by Mac. This 7-inch features hand-numbered sleeves printed at Barefoot Press (the original printer of all the 7-inches Merge put out “back in the day”) and is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide. It’s only available at your local record store beginning April 20!

Mac shared the inspiration behind the single:

I was in high school when I first heard one of my favorite hardcore records, the split album on Dischord with the bands Faith and Void, two very different DC punk bands. It’s a favorite of a lot of people, I think. I love both sides but everyone always refers to it as “Faith/Void,” so I wanted to have a single called “Void/Faith” and set about to write those songs. Thematically the titles were already in the neighborhood of where Superchunk’s next album was going anyway. The cover is even an abstracted homage to art on the Void side of the original. Musically we aren’t like either of those bands, but that era influences a lot of what we do. We recorded the single at Overdub Lane with Beau Sorenson and John Plymale, and it was mixed by Beau Sorenson.

DestroyerThis Night double-LP
The 2002 Merge debut of Destroyer, remastered and available on vinyl for the first time in the US. This special pressing of This Night is limited to 2,000 copies worldwide and is a Record Store Day exclusive. Visit our SoundCloud page to stream two tracks from This Night.

When asked for his thoughts about the album, Dan Bejar responded:

Dear Customers,

For 10 years I’ve been telling people that This Night is my favorite of Destroyer’s nine LPs. I have not been lying. It’s got mystery and sass, lots of guitar playing in the style that I like, drumming that is so hard to capture you maybe had to be there. It is the first Destroyer album with full-on rock poetry of the kind I would chase deep into the 2000s, then abandon in this new corrupt decade. It is the first instance of me learning how to sing with my actual voice. We learned the songs fast and recorded them fast, but took our sweet time while playing them, which I think is a good mix. I turned 30 four days before the record hit the streets. But even before that, I knew This Night was doomed.

Yours,
db

Remember, both of these releases will be available exclusively at your local independent record stores beginning Saturday, April 20! Find more information and a full list of releases & participating stores at RecordStoreDay.com.

We are happy to announce the addition of William Tyler and Reigning Sound to the Merge Records family!

William Tyler has long been associated with Merge through his lengthy career as multi-instrumentalist in Lambchop. His 2011 debut solo album was described by Pitchfork as “arguably the most vital, energized album by an American solo guitarist in a decade or more.”

Reigning Sound was formed in 2001 by Memphis garage-punk legend Greg Cartwright, who is also known for his bands The Compulsive Gamblers and The Oblivians. The A.V. Club says: “Cartwright’s songwriting draws on Stax, Sun, and the Brill Building, combining a classic pop structure—simple and memorable—with a fair amount of only-got-this-studio-booked-for-an-hour immediacy.”

We look forward to releasing albums by both artists in 2013.

To celebrate, we are hosting our first CMJ showcase since 2008! Tickets are on sale this Friday via the Mercury Lounge. Come help us welcome our new bands and revel in the Merge!

On June 12, Superchunk will release a new single just in time for summer! “This Summer,” the A-side of this limited-edition seven-inch, is the first new Superchunk single since the 2010 release of their widely acclaimed album Majesty Shredding. The B-side features the band’s own take on Bananarama’s ’80s hit “Cruel Summer.” As a bonus, the single will include a digital download code for an acoustic version of “This Summer.”

Produced by Scott Solter with artwork featuring photography by Harrison Haynes (Les Savy Fav), the seven-inch will be pressed on hot white vinyl limited to 1300 hand-numbered copies worldwide.

Pre-order Superchunk’s “This Summer” b/w “Cruel Summer” 7-inch now in the Merge store.

Of the songs chosen for the 7-inch, Mac says:

I like “summer” songs. They could be about the actual season, or just be songs listened to most while doing things you do during the summer—taking a road trip, going to the coast, sitting outside on the roof or the porch or the beach or wherever. And actually, maybe most of those songs were written during the winter or the spring by someone somewhere cold who was looking forward to summer (because for one thing, if you want a song to come out during the summer, please note that you have to make it long before then).

And since a new Superchunk album is a ways off, we thought a summer-themed single was at least pitching in a little bit for 2012. “This Summer” is about all the things listed above plus some ritual wiping-the-slate-type energy. Coming up with a B-side didn’t take long. Luckily for fans of Seals & Crofts, Nancy and Lee, Spent, Carole King, and the 3Ds, their “summer” songs were spared. Bananarama, here we come!

If you get the “demo” version of “This Summer,” it’s one of many demos for this song. The very first one was actually all electric and sounds a little too close to the studio version to be worth hearing. I had to do a bunch of quiet ones to get the structure right; this is one of those.

The Clambakes Vol. 6: One in a Row is a recording from 1994 of Superchunk’s show at First Avenue in Minneapolis during the Foolish tour. Well, at least I get it right about half of the time.”

All Tomorrow’s Parties announced today that the ATP festival curated by Jeff Mangum originally scheduled for December 2-4 has been rescheduled for March 9-11, 2012 at the same location of Butlins Holiday Center, Minehead, UK.

It should be noted that the decision to postpone the ATP curated by Jeff Mangum festival as made earlier today was not Jeff Mangum’s decision and he is as disappointed as everyone else that the festival is not taking place on the original date.

Visit ATPfestival.com for more information on the line-up for the rescheduled festival in March as it unfolds.

In the meantime, there are still tickets to Superchunk’s London show with Let’s Wrestle at Scala on December 1!

This month marks the 10-year anniversary of Orange County Social Club, a neighborhood bar in Carrboro, North Carolina, founded by our dear friend and former Merge-intern-turned-employee Tricia Mesigian.

OCSC marks its first decade with a week-long celebration that begins this Sunday, October 9, at 4 p.m. in the bar’s parking lot. There will be free music by several local bands and food for purchase from Neal’s Deli, the proceeds from which will benefit MusiCares.

Then Monday through Thursday from 6–8 p.m., OCSC will host indoor semi-acoustic shows, with an additional solo set at 9 p.m. on Tuesday by Mac McCaughan. On Thursday evening, Shark Quest, who put out three lovely albums on Merge, will play an instrumental set. While all of these evening shows are free, donations will be collected and put towards a scholarship fund that Tricia has established with the Town of Carrboro to help send local aspiring entrepreneurs to a small-business training course.

And as if all that weren’t enough, there will be two shows at the Cat’s Cradle, both starting at 8 p.m., to cap off the week’s festivities. The show on Friday, October 14, includes an appearance by The Ghost of Rock, which features members of Pipe. On Saturday the 15th, Crooked Fingers will play some songs off of their soon-to-be-released album, Breaks in the Armor. Saturday also sees the return of Seven Brides for the Meatwagon, a covers supergroup that includes Jim Wilbur and Jon Wurster (on guitar!) of Superchunk. Jon reveals, “We will deliver unto you the best and worst of the ’90s, the 2000s, and the OCSC jukebox. We haven’t played in ten years, so cut us some slack.”

Tickets for Friday and Saturday are on sale now at Cat’s Cradle, OCSC, CD Alley, and Schoolkids Records. Proceeds from the Cradle shows will also go to MusiCares. Visit and “like” OCSC on Facebook for full details and updates on next week’s events.

Congratulations, Trish, on your much-deserved success!

Mac McCaughan of Superchunk and Portastatic has composed original scores for four films by noted experimental filmmaker Maya Deren, and he will perform them live on Thursday, September 29, at the world premiere of Transfigured Time: Music for the Films of Maya Deren, which opens the Westobou Festival in Augusta, Georgia.

Maya Deren (1917–1961) is often referred to as “the mother of the American underground cinema.” Her films are known for their startling and surrealistic imagery in which time and space are altered to create a world somewhere between dreams and reality. In 1946, Ms. Deren became the first filmmaker to receive a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and later that year she was the recipient of the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix Internationale. From photographer Cindy Sherman to artist Matthew Barney to filmmaker David Lynch, Maya Deren’s profound influence as a filmmaker and theorist resonates to this very day.

McCaughan’s compositional accomplishments include original scores for Who Loves the Sun and Looking for LeonardHis live scores for silent films include the Seattle International Film Festival’s presentation of Tod Browning’s The Unknown and Teinosuke Kinugasa’s A Page of Madness with Superchunk at the San Francisco Film Festival.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour in the lovely gardens of Sacred Heart Cultural Center. DJs will set the evening’s tone, and unique food and beverages will be available from The Bee’s Knees. The premiere of Transfigured Time: Music for the Films of Maya Deren will begin at sunset in the architectural splendor of Sacred Heart Cultural Center with McCaughan leading a small ensemble.

A co-production of Semi-Precious Productions and Sacred Heart Cultural Center, Transfigured Time will build upon the success of their presentation of 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests at the 2010 Westobou Festival.
