Telekinesis

Telekinesis
The dread of the sophomore album is a common affliction among new artists, and in early 2009, Michael Benjamin Lerner was no exception. Excitement about the success of Telekinesis! left Michael feeling edgy and restless when it came time to write new songs. The long-distance relationship that inspired his debut album's songs of wanderlust had ended, a mystery ailment had rendered him physically off-balance and (thankfully, only temporarily) deaf in one ear, his touring van had been severely damaged in an accident, and he had just returned from a much-needed "escape" to Berlin in the dead of winter where he had banished himself to a room in the warehouse district to write songs from 9 to 5 each day. Always attempting to capture a specific moment or feeling with his songwriting, Michael spent no more than a day on each song. However, he was still a couple of songs short of an album that he could be happy with.

Michael describes his method of songwriting as "heart on my sleeve," so trying to write more "super-pop" songs just wasn't working while his life was such a mess. He took a few months off, let his balance return, fixed his van, and went on tour, returning energized and ready to head back into the studio.

Continuing their partnership from Telekinesis!, Michael and producer Chris Walla again recorded to analog tape. They tossed out all the rules-as they are wont to do when they get together-and, as Michael says, "went a little crazy," spontaneously dancing and recording drum parts backwards. Walla shared his love of Mark Robinson's Flin Flon project (specifically, the 1998 Teenbeat album A-OK), and Michael became enthralled with the fuzzed-out bass sounds. For the first time, he used his new bass guitar to write songs, and Michael's characteristic Telekinesis pop hooks combined with his darker lyrics, giving the music a decidedly rocking direction.

"50 Ways," which Michael describes as "the most complicated song I've ever written," uses a reference to Paul Simon's tongue-in-cheek breakup song "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" to express the anger and frustration of leaving someone but still seeing them everywhere you go. "Please Ask for Help" was inspired by listening to The Cure's Disintegration on repeat. Michael used what he calls "that dirty bass line" to evoke the "weird lust" he imagines swirling around in a seedy bar on a Saturday night.

The result of all of this is 12 Desperate Straight Lines, twelve new songs of heartache, anger, and even a little hopefulness. With lyrics like "I cannot love you" and "I never loved you," it's not hard to guess that this is a breakup album, but Michael's indomitable optimism shines through in the infectiousness of the music and in the final words of the final track, "Gotta Get It Right Now": "And it's alright, if it means nothing / Cuz it meant something, anyway."

The new Telekinesis band features Jason Narducy (Robert Pollard band, Bob Mould band) on bass and Cody Votolato (Jaguar Love, The Blood Brothers) on guitar.

Michael, Cody & Jason give a “fuzz-pop” spin to this Belle and Sebastian classic, and Michael is the first “singing drummer” to visit the round room.

When it comes to basketball, Merge HQ is a divided house (Duke / Carolina in case you have never heard of The Game of Basketball before), but this March we are all backing five of our favorite bands as they take to the local stage from March 4 through March 13.

Superchunk kicks off the madness on March 4 with their first show at the Cat’s Cradle since before the release of Majesty Shredding. Next, WILD FLAG will play Local 506 on March 11. WILD FLAG is the new “supergroup” featuring Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony, Janet Weiss and Rebecca Cole. On March 12, Wye Oak will celebrate the release of their third album Civilian at Local 506. Telekinesis and The Love Language will wrap up Merge Madness on March 13 with an already sold out show at Local 506.

To celebrate, local record stores (listed below) will be giving away these collectible 12″ x 18″ screenprinted posters designed by our very own Maggie Fost, with the purchase of any full-length release from Merge.

Tickets are already gone for the Telekinesis / Love Language show and are going fast for the other three, so don’t waste any time getting your tickets to Superchunk, WILD FLAG & Wye Oak!

Telekinesis released their sophomore album 12 Desperate Straight Lines on Tuesday, and the band will be celebrating release week with a stop at KEXP Seattle today, February 16! Listen to the band play live at 12pm Pacific / 3pm Eastern on 90.3 FM in the Seattle area, or online at KEXP.org!

NPR Music’s Robin Hilton describes Telekinesis’ new edgier sound, “The group’s only permanent member, Michael Benjamin Lerner, writes songs that exude loneliness, heartache and the dizzying grief of dysfunctional relationships. But his agony is packaged in tightly wound, unabashedly upbeat pop songs. Misery has never sounded so worthy of company.”

12 Desperate Straight Lines is available on CD and LP in the Merge store and your local record store, and you can find Telekinesis on Twitter and Facebook.

On February 15, Merge Records will release 12 Desperate Straight Lines, the sophomore album from Telekinesis on CD, LP and digital download.

When Telekinesis mastermind Michael Benjamin Lerner set out in July to record songs for the follow-up to his debut album Telekinesis!, he found himself with no band, a case of vertigo, and a wrecked van. The long-distance relationship that inspired his debut album’s songs of wanderlust had ended, and he had just returned from a much-needed escape to Berlin where he banished himself to a room in the warehouse district to write songs from 9 to 5 each day.

With the original recording date scrapped, Michael was inspired (by the heavy, fuzzy bass in Flin Flon’s A-OK) to buy a bass guitar and, in a sudden burst of inspiration, wrote four more songs for the album. His second attempt at recording led him to Portland and Jackpot! Studios. Michael and Chris Walla continued their partnership from Telekinesis! and again recorded to tape. They tossed out all the rules—as they are wont to do when they get together—and, as Michael says, “went a little crazy,” with impromptu dance parties and recording drum parts backwards.

The result of all of this is 12 Desperate Straight Lines, twelve new songs of heartache, anger, and even a little hopefulness. Telekinesis has re-emerged with a new band featuring Jason Narducy (Robert Pollard band, Bob Mould band) on bass and Cody Votolato (Jaguar Love, The Blood Brothers) on guitar. The van is fixed, the dizziness is gone, and Michael Benjamin Lerner has returned with more proof that Spin was right when they said, “If you don’t like Telekinesis, your ears don’t work.”

Download “Car Crash” from the new album now at Spin.com.
