She & Him announce May release for “Volume 3″ & summer tour dates

She & Him aka Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward will release their third album of original material, entitled Volume 3, on on May 7 (May 13 in UK/Europe). The duo will also be hitting the road for a month-long tour this summer, which kicks off at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on June 13, and includes a headlining show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl on June 23, as well as an evening at Central Park Summerstage in July. Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell and Camera Obscura provide support on select dates.  A full list of tour dates are below, and ticket presale information is at SheandHim.com.

With fourteen songs – 11 Deschanel originals and 3 covers – Volume 3 is an effortlessly effervescent, bleached-out-in-the-sun pop record. The album features some of the most dynamic, complex songs Deschanel has ever written, allowing for tempo shifts, disco grooves, string arrangements on multiple tracks, and horn flourishes that perfectly suit the She & Him sound.  Produced by M. Ward, and recorded in Los Angeles, Portland, and New York City, Volume 3 features guest contributions from NRBQ’s Joey Spampinato, Mike Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom Hagerman from Devotchka.

Since the release of the band’s album Volume Two in 2010, much has happened to both She and to Him. Deschanel, whose television show New Girl has cemented her status as a sitcom star, continued to hone her songwriting skills, writing the theme song for her new show, in addition to being nominated for a Grammy for Best Original Song for  the movie Winnie the Pooh.  She wrote songs for Volume 3 during small pockets of downtime while filming New Girl, as Ward toured the world behind his latest solo creation, A Wasteland Companion, which was released to massive critical acclaim last year. Together and separately, the duo has sold over a million albums domestically – a testament to their classic sonic arrangements, their rich, incomparable voices, and their ability to craft pitch-perfect, Brill Building-esque choruses around timeless, universal themes.

Track listing for Volume 3:
1. I’ve Got Your Number, Son
2. Never Wanted Your Love
3. Baby
4. I Could’ve Been Your Girl

M. Ward launches iTunes app

M. Ward’s free iTunes App is now available in the iTunes store. The app allows users the ability to listen live to hundreds of public radio station across the United States. Searchable alphabetically by state and by map, the M. Ward App allows users to locate nearly 1,000 of Matt’s favorite independent and public radio stations across the country. Wherever you’re traveling in the US, the M. Ward App will locate the nearest quality radio station to keep you company.

A long rumored Luddite renowned for recording his albums onto analog tape, M. Ward’s love of radio is well documented. His 2005 album, Transistor Radio was a collection of songs inspired by “memories of a utopian radio power” which he dedicated to “the last of the remaining independent radio stations.” Touring the US over the past few years Ward often found it a challenge to find a great local radio station to accompany him. In creating this App – which also streams M. Ward music and provides up to the minute touring information and social networking content – Ward has created the perfect traveling companion for radio connoisseurs everywhere.

The free M. Ward app is available now in the iTunes store

M. Ward’s A Wasteland Companion in stores, performs on KCRW & Conan today!

M. Ward‘s highly anticipated new solo album A Wasteland Companion is in stores today, April 10. To celebrate, listen to the archived KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic at Apogee’s Berkeley Street Studio session here. The release day festivities continue with a live performance tonight on Conan, which airs at 11pm Eastern/10pm Central on TBS.

In their introduction to the “First Listen,” NPR describes M. Ward:

Some musicians write for car stereos; others for laptops, boom boxes or weight-room sound systems. M. Ward writes for beat-up transistor radios, as if he were sending his songs hurtling backward through time and space, to a point where music coexists with a ghostly, almost otherworldly crackle.

NPR’s Morning Edition also interviewed M. Ward about his inspirations and traveling.

Watch the video for “The First Time I Ran Away” and order A Wasteland Companion on CD or LP now in the Merge store, or at your local record store.
