Eleanor Friedberger announces summer tour dates

The Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger will be hitting the road in support of her forthcoming, second solo album, Personal Record, out on June 4th in the US and June 10th in the UK and Europe on Merge Records. Cassandra Jenkins and members of Icewater will be Eleanor’s backing band for these dates with TEEN providing support. Tour dates are listed below.

Personal Record is Eleanor Friedberger at her finest – recorded in late 2012 in New York and Los Angeles, and written with musician/novelist Wesley Stace, Personal Record is full of love songs – hellos and goodbyes, infatuation, pre-occupation, loss – but not simply about romantic love. Eleanor explains, “They’re also love songs to music: how you feel on stage when you do something spontaneous and it works, how you feel when you hear someone sing a song for the first time, what it’s like to watch a friend perform, how you can feel close to someone you barely know because you both happen to love the same record, or playing the same song forty times in a row, not being able to rest until you own every song recorded by your favorite singer, or every version of your favorite song.”

Personal Record is available now for pre-order digitally at iTunes and on CD and LP in the Merge store. Watch Eleanor’s album trailer set in beautiful Jamaica, too!

Divine Fits announce fall tour dates, play Fallon on Friday

Divine Fits has confirmed its first full scale U.S. tour in support of its recently released and widely acclaimed debut album, A Thing Called Divine Fits. Of the album, NPR’s Stephen Thompson declares, “Comparisons are fair and inevitable, but the album deserves that highest of compliments: For all its familiar components, it sounds like Divine Fits.”

The tour will kick off October 16 in Pawtucket, RI and will wind up with a November 4 show at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theater. The band recently made its live debut to uniformly positive reviews. Of the band’s debut performance, Austinist raved, “The rapturous applause throughout the entirety of the band’s excellent set let them know they were doing more than a few things right. Put simply, things couldn’t have gone better.” Newly confirmed dates include this year’s Moogfest and the end of their Los Angeles residency, tonight at The Echo.

The band will make their late-night television debut this Friday, September 7 on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

The Los Angeles Times called the penultimate show of the residency a “powerful, at times hypnotic gig at the Masonic Temple” that proved “three men with recognizable gifts and a keen sense of song can build mesmerizing musical structures.”

Fans can sign up for information on exclusive pre-sales at DivineFits.com. Further news, information updates, etc. can also be found at Facebook or @divinefits on Twitter and Instagram.

A Thing Called Divine Fits is available now on CD, LP and digital in the Merge store.

Last Summer sounds more intimate and accessible than any of her band’s nine albums; it’s a perfect soundtrack for an afternoon spent sifting through a box of old Polaroids.” ~NPR Music

Jeff Mangum announces new tour dates including the line-up for the rescheduled ATP

Jeff Mangum has announced a new leg of US tour dates as well as European dates and the newly rescheduled All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, UK he is curating this March. A portion of the proceeds for these shows will benefit Children of the Blue Sky, which aims to place orphaned Mongolian children with foster families. Jeff’s show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music will be his last New York area tour date for the foreseeable future.

After Mangum’s recent NYC Town Hall show, RollingStone.com said, “Few dared to expect it, but Jeff Mangum is back, and the music world is immeasurably richer for it.” Spin.com offered “Five Reasons Why Jeff Mangum is Magical” saying, “For two generations of listeners who grew up with Mangum’s intimate voice coming through the headphones, alone in that peculiar sound-world he conjured and feeling they were its sole inhabitant, this is the moment they’ve all been waiting for.”

The line-up for the rescheduled All Tomorrow’s Parties festival curated by Jeff Mangum has been announced and will include the Magnetic Fields, Versus, the Music Tapes, Sebadoh and more! Special “family tickets” are being issued and all original bookings will be honored. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit ATPfestival.com.

Crooked Fingers – “Breaks in the Armor” in stores now!

We’re happy to welcome Crooked Fingers back to the Merge family with the release of Breaks in the Armor, available today on CD, LP, and digital download.

To celebrate the release, The AV Club has posted live video of Eric Bachmann and Liz Durrett playing “Bad Blood” and “Your Apocalypse” on the top of the Chicago Tribune building.

SPIN writes:

Crooked Fingers has been Eric Bachmann’s primary band for the past decade, but before that, he fronted Archers of Loaf, the seminal college rock act that sprung from Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s vaunted ’90s indie rock scene. And while Bachmann made news this year by reuniting Archers in January, then taking them out on the road at festivals like Sasquatch, he was holding an ace the whole time: Breaks in the Armor, a new, superb Crooked Fingers album.

Bachmann, who writes, records, and performs songs mainly under the name Crooked Fingers, lives in Athens, Georgia, these days, where he recorded at The Bakery with Matt Yelton (live sound engineer for the Pixies) throughout the winter of 2010/2011, enlisting the help of Liz Durrett on backing vocals. It’s a cohesive and diverse set of songs with less adorned and more direct and affecting arrangements. Beautifully understated, artfully phrased, and ultimately a paean to perseverance, the album seems to suggest that the breaks in the armor are more important than the armor itself.

Over the course of the coming year, Bachmann will alternate between touring as Crooked Fingers and with Archers of Loaf, making the most of two distinct and rewarding modes of expression and performance. All of which seems to be exactly where he should be again.

Order your copy of Crooked FingersBreaks in the Armor on CD, LP, and digital download in the Merge store today.
