On October 7, we will celebrate our longstanding relationship with East River Pipe by releasing his critically acclaimed fourth album, The Gasoline Age, on vinyl. The reissue includes a download of the full album as well as nine previously unreleased tracks, spanning various years and recording set-ups, from the East River Pipe archives.
Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the most gifted of the new loners,” F.M. Cornog, a.k.a. East River Pipe, originally released The Gasoline Age 15 years ago. Named 1999’s Album of the Year by both The New York Times and The Independent (UK), The Gasoline Age was inspired in large part by nighttime drives on New Jersey’s seedy Route 22. Automobile imagery appears throughout the album: cybercars, stolen cars, pimpmobiles. The vehicles all seem to carry with them a romanticism that emphasizes even further Cornog’s gift of creating a lyrical mood without tying his flights of fancy down to specifics.
Cornog’s partner Barbara Powers wrote of the bonus tracks: “F.M. agreed somewhat reluctantly to go through his old tapes to see if there was anything there [worth including as bonus material]. Some songs, we barely remember even hearing ourselves. But once he had a sense of what there was to choose from, he was finally able to agree that some of the songs weren’t too bad. If there is one consistency to East River Pipe, it would have to be F.M.’s insistence that what he does is nothing special. I’m glad that at least on this occasion, I was able to override his general view of his work as worthless and pry a few songs loose from the ‘vault.’"
