Merge Records partners with Google Play for label documentary & exclusive songs

Today, Google Play premiered a new documentary in the US about Merge Records. In candid, amusing interviews, Mac, Laura, Merge musicians, and friends of the label talk about its evolution and unwavering focus on its artists. Daniel Handler, author of the Lemony Snicket series of books (and sometime member of The Magnetic Fields), narrates the documentary.

Also, music fans in the US are invited to download 25 free Merge tracks, including five new and exclusive recordings from Superchunk, The Mountain Goats, Telekinesis, Saint Rich, and Hiss Golden Messenger.

Visit Google Play now to watch the documentary and download the tracks (US only).

Five Classic Superchunk albums to be released in Europe on March 17

On March 17, Merge will reissue five classic Superchunk albums on CD and LP in Europe.

Mac says:

When we first started coming to Europe (our first European tour was with Mudhoney in April 1992), we were lucky to have Christof and his fine label City Slang on our side. City Slang released all the records between No Pocky For Kitty and Indoor Living and supported our sometimes successful, sometimes sucky European touring efforts throughout the roaring mid '90s. Those albums have been out of print in Europe for quite a while, and we are excited to say that Merge will be making the following titles available there on CD and LP as of March 17th:

No Pocky for Kitty
On the Mouth
Here's Where the Strings Come In
Indoor Living

2013 Year End Lists: Laura Ballance

I have been doing a lot of work on my yard this year, so I am obsessed with plants, and...uh, yard accessories. And also, I have been using the heck out of Pinterest. I might have to count that among my favorites too. It has been an excellent tool. Here is what I am into at the moment, in no particular order.

hens and chicks/sedums, HOTT!
Japanese forest grass
ornamental grasses = less lawn
recycled materials
amethyst in snow
concrete balls
homely topiary
un-procurable pizza ovens
spurge, pretty much all of it.

Listen to Superchunk's "I Hate Music" now at NPR Music

Superchunk's new album I Hate Music will be in stores on August 20, but you can stream it now at NPR Music. In the introduction to the "First Listen" stream NPR's Stephen Thompson writes, "Infused with winning, strident energy, I Hate Music still fits in darker ruminations on age and aging — Superchunk's sound remains versatile enough to accommodate both a 75-second whiff of brash punk ("Staying Home") and a six-minute album-closer ("What Can We Do") in which McCaughan reflects on nearly 30 years of adulthood with shrugging wisdom.
