Wye Oak's Shriek was released yesterday to enthusiastic reviews worldwide, and features on Stereogum, Grantland, and more.
"Shriek is more of a continuation than a disruption: It’s a product of the catalytic bond between Mr. Stack, on synthesizers and drum programming, and Ms. Wasner, on electric bass." —NY Times
"Despite its electronic emphasis, Shriek bypasses conventional synthpop for more introspective, individual territory." —Wondering Sound
"There's no question Wasner could make these songs work as big guitar anthems, but as skeletal, textured electronic tunes they really let the nuance of both her songwriting and her voice shine through." —Under The Radar
The A.V. Club premiered Wye Oak's new video for "Glory" today, check it out!
Wye Oak's fourth LP Shriek is available now on CD, LP and with t-shirt bundle in the Merge store, iTunes, Amazon, Rdio, Spotify, or at your favorite local independant record store.
“[Shriek] is by turns dream, expansive and, ultimately, triumphant.” —Rolling Stone
"Shriek is synthpop haze with serious percussive backbone, the thunderous clatter of Stack’s drumming often stepping up to make the noise that Wasner’s guitar isn’t." —The AV Club
“The tautness of Wasner’s writing had little to do with her instrument of choice and everything with the woman behind the strings: This is nervy, charged music, buzzing like a brain in heat.” —Pitchfork
“Brainy, buzzy…high minded grooves that benefit from Wasner’s heavenly vocals.” —SPIN
Merge Records continues its 25th anniversary celebration this summer by teaming up with Duke Performances for their popular Music in the Gardens series. Taking place throughout the months of June and July, the series invites local bands and musicians in the national spotlight to play at various venues on the Duke University campus. This year, they have extended that reach to include artists on neighboring Durham-based label Merge Records.
Among the Merge artists slated to appear at Duke’s Baldwin Auditorium are Lambchop—performing their iconic album Nixon front to back—in addition to William Tyler, Mount Moriah, Stephin Merritt, and Mark Eitzel. The historic venue has recently reopened after a two-year renovation and will serve as the perfect backdrop for these special shows.
For family-friendly outdoor concerts, join Merge artists King Khan & the Shrines, the newly signed Spider Bags, The Rosebuds, Richard Buckner, and Portastatic for the Music in the Gardens series. These shows will take place in the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics are encouraged for these performances, and food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

NPR's Stephen Thompson says of the record, "Civilian's title track stands out as an alternately ominous and furious rock ringer, but the rest of the record is similarly satisfying while finding practical uses for the spaces between notes. Pay special attention to the masterfully slow-burning, quiet build of 'We Were Wealth,' which blooms subtly into something special. In doing so, it's emblematic of an enormously promising band that's doing the exact same thing."
