Telekinesis' 12 Desperate Straight Lines release date contest!
To celebrate the release date of Telekinesis' sophomore album 12 Desperate Straight Lines, Michael Benjamin Lerner and Merge are pairing up to present a special Twitter scavenger hunt contest!
On Tuesday, February 15, Michael Benjamin Lerner (@_TELEKINESIS) will offer clues to find a copy of 12 Desperate Straight Lines hidden in another band's section of one of the stores listed below. To win, visit the participating store in your town, find the misfiled Telekinesis album, and purchase it. The record store employee will then give you a Telekinesis prize pack including a "Please Ask for Help" import 7-inch, two tickets to an upcoming Telekinesis show, a silk-screened poster, Telekinesis pencils, and a Polaroid taken by Michael Benjamin Lerner himself, all housed in a new Merge tote bag designed by The Clientele's Alasdair MacLean! Pre-order East River Pipe's We Live in Rented Rooms now!
Under the pen name East River Pipe, F. M. Cornog has made six extraordinary albums, all recorded and mixed entirely on a cheap multi-track mini-studio, with a bare minimum of outboard gear. These biting, ruminative micro-masterpieces have won Cornog much critical praise, but never fame and fortune. He has painted his America as a neon-lit wasteland filled with deluded losers, cheats, junkies, ultra-capitalist businessmen, freeway-roaming dreamers, and the tragically fated.
Spin magazine declares We Live in Rented Rooms "a return to hopeful melancholy, lonely drum machines, everyday drug stories, even a '70s yacht-rock sketch."
Read this great New York magazine feature to learn more about F. M. Cornog, the man behind East River Pipe, as well as new interviews with MeccaLecca.com and the Village Voice. Watch for East River Pipe's week as MAGNET's "Guest Editor" beginning February 14 too!

Wye Oak extend spring tour in support of Civilian
Wye Oak are gearing up for the release of their highly anticipated third album, Civilian, with tour dates both here and abroad. Jenn and Andy just finished a run of dates opening for The Decemberists, a pairing that had Time Out NY wondering if "'King' Meloy was ceding ground to a queen of sorts, Jenn Wasner."
Without leaning on conventional structure, the songs on Civilian beguile with fascinating chords and melodies, Jenn's voice and riveting lyrics, mesmerizing rhythms, and an intoxicating aural landscape. Just as good writing has meaning between the lines, Civilian has meaning between the sounds: the combinations of harmonies, timbres, and words summon vivid and ineffable associations just beyond reach. While their debut album If Children was about the bonds of family, and its follow-up, The Knot, was about bonds with everyone else, Civilian is about bonds breaking and powerful energies being released.
Civilian has made the "most anticipated" lists from NPR, who called it "blustery and mysterious," and The A.V. Club, who wrote that the title track made a "whole album's worth seem very enticing indeed."
See live video from Wye Oak's "secret" show during the blizzard in NYC last week, and download the title track, "Civilian."

Apex Manor are celebrating the release day of their debut album, The Year of Magical Drinking, with a new video for "My My Mind" and new east coast tour dates!
Directed by Jonathan Singer-Vine, the cousin of band member Adam Vine, the video for "My My Mind" features bloody heartache in the gritty desert. "My cousin happens to be an incredibly talented video director (Nick Cannon, Marty McFly), and he came up with the idea for this when he first heard the song," Vine says. "So we headed out to the high desert in mid-December, at the beginning of the LA monsoon, and the clouds parted just enough for us to make this."

Welcome, Times New Viking!
Times New Viking will release their new album Dancer Equired on April 26 via their new home in the US, Merge Records.
Dancer Equired is a return to the hive, even if the record's creation was out of their usual boundaries. It should be known that for the first time the trio escaped to a studio, between Columbus Discount Recordings and the famed Mus-i-col (the closest thing to Muscle Shoals we got) during the Summer of Violence. With the help of Adam Smith and Dustin White, Times New Viking produced and recorded an album that sounds like a mellow night out. Though it abandons the pissy histrionics of the past, it remains loud and brash, with mammoth guitars still piled on, only magnifying the bright beautiful traits the band has nurtured since the beginning.
It would be easy to describe the album as a new chapter, but knowing the forward-thinking, never-settled energies of Times New Viking, this is an entirely new book. Rip it up and start again.
Times New Viking also premiered the video for the album track "No Room to Live" on Pitchfork. Directed and edited by Brandon Reichard and Pelham Johnston with production from the band, the vibrant footage saw around 40 artists from Columbus, OH, and elsewhere contribute by printing each frame (nearly 3,000 of them) from real video; hand drawing, coloring, or decorating them; and putting them back together.
Watch the video for "No Room to Live" now.
The band is confirmed for a number of appearances at this year's SXSW Festival including the Merge label showcase.
Times New Viking are Adam Elliott, Beth Murphy, and Jared Phillips. You can find them on the web at their website and on Twitter.

She & Him "Don't Look Back" video
She & Him premiered their new video for "Don't Look Back" on Design*Sponge. Editor Grace Bonney described the video:
"'Don't Look Back' (off of their new album, Volume Two) is not only a wonderful song, but also a visual trip down mid-century memory lane with furniture, decor and references that I think so many of you will love and appreciate. Whether you're in it for the classic furniture designs, the sounds or both, I hope you'll enjoy this video debut. It's so fantastic to get to celebrate the worlds of design and music colliding."

Volume Two is available on CD, LP, and digital download now in the Merge store.
Superchunk & Coliseum join forces for Record Store Day split 7" of Misfits covers
Merge Records and Temporary Residence Limited have partnered to co-release "Horror Business" b/w "Bullet," a limited-edition 7-inch from Superchunk and Coliseum on Saturday, April 16-Record Store Day. Limited to 1,500 copies and available exclusively in record stores, the cover was designed by Coliseum singer/guitarist Ryan Patterson, with a nod to the artwork from the Misfits' "3 Hits from Hell" single. The 7-inch will be issued on three different colors of vinyl: yellow w/black splatter, magenta w/black splatter, and standard black (500 copies of each).
Superchunk first covered "Horror Business" at a 1997 Halloween show in Washington, DC (the band even dressed up as the Misfits that night) and finally decided to record the song in 2010 to give away on their website as a Halloween gift to fans. Over the course of the 2010 US tour in support of Majesty Shredding, the band included "Horror Business" in many encores, often enlisting guest musicians on the drum kit-including comedian Todd Barry and Samhain drummer London May!
Coliseum is one of punk's most forward-thinking and trailblazing outfits, coming from the basements of the hardcore circuit to carve out their own unique niche of heavy post-punk. Their third album, House With a Curse, was released in June 2010 on Temporary Residence Limited.
Coliseum's love for the music of Glenn Danzig has been well documented, having recorded a version of Danzig's "Am I Demon" for a 2005 split with Doomriders (included on the recent Goddamage deluxe reissue from Temporary Residence), which has been a staple of their live encores for years. Their cover of "Bullet" was recorded in October 2009 during the demo sessions for House With a Curse. The recording took place at The Funeral Home Studio in Louisville, KY, which operates above a functioning funeral home. Coliseum singer/guitarist Ryan Patterson requested to record his vocals from a coffin...but was denied.
Make your plans now to visit your favorite local record store on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 16. More information about Record Store Day and a full list of participating stores can be found at RecordStoreDay.com.
