Reigning Sound reveal new single “Never Coming Home”

Today on Noisey, Reigning Sound revealed the second single “Never Coming Home” from their forthcoming album Shattered.

The band’s principal songwriter/member Greg Cartwright had this to say about the track:

This song really came together about a week before I mixed it. While listening and trying to decide how to approach it, I realized it needed a bridge. That’s a hell of a thing to realize two months after you record a song! Then it struck me that perhaps I could make a tape edit and drop in with an acoustic guitar and play the bridge solo. I realized I’d need a little help pulling off the effect so I asked my friends The Memphis Dawls to lay strings on the track as well. We were very pleased to find that the violin and cello really brought the whole song to a new place and made the new bridge seem like it had always been there.

Greg Cartwright has led the shifting cast of characters in Reigning Sound since 2001. You may be familiar with some of the band’s work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg’s other projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers, ’68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras

Shattered is Reigning Sound’s first album for Merge and their first full LP since 2009’s Love and Curses. The album was recorded at Daptone’s Brooklyn studio and masterfully engineered by Wayne Gordon. The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and something in between. There are only 11 songs on the album, but the band reckons it’s just right.

Shattered will be released on July 15th and can be pre-ordered now in the Merge store. You can catch Reigning Sound live this May and July, including a performance at the Merge 25 Festival on July 24th.
