The Hill, released in 2000, is based on characters in Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. Originally recorded during a break in recording Devotion & Doubt, Buckner put the cassette tape in his glove compartment only to come across it four years later. Calexico's Joey Burnsand John Convertino provided the rhythm section with a strict "no drums or bass rule."
